How Does Chewing and Swallowing Impact Digestion?

Did you know that digestion starts in the mouth?👄 The way we chew and swallow can impact the way our body digests our food. Here's how:

👉Chewing is an important part of the digestive process. It creates saliva containing enzymes which start breaking down the food so that it can move more easily through our body. If we tend to take large bites and/or chew our food inefficiently that can affect the way its digested and can cause issues like constipation.

👉Swallowing also plays a key role. Often if we are swallowing incorrectly we can be swallowing air ("the gulp" sound). That can cause our stomach to fill with unnecessary air intake causing excessive burping, hiccups, or heartburn.

Many times, we see that GI concerns, such as reflux, heart burn, or constipation improve once we start working on optimal chewing and swallowing patterns. 🤯🤯
