Treating speech sounds and feeding issues without taking the time to assess airway/oral function can prevent us from recognizing the big picture and potentially the root cause of an issue! Have you ever had those kids on your caseload who just weren't making progress like you would've expected?? Try taking a step back and consider the whole child. Then make sure you take a good look at the orofacial structures and function to rule out any OMDs!
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
đDoes the child drool?
đWhere is her tongue at rest? During speech?
đIs the tongue moving functionaly in the mouth?
đCan they dissociate tongue, jaw, and lips?
đIs he mouth breathing? Are her lips open?
đAre they exhibiting hyperactive behavior?
đDo they have large tonsils?
đDark circles under their eyes?
đMalocclusion?
If you're not sure, refer to a therapist who specializes in orofacial myology.
