Are You and Your Family Getting Good Quality Sleep?

Updated: Nov 17

Here are some signs that may mean that you or your child is not getting good quality sleep:

1.Mouth Breathing, loud breathing, or snoring

In order to access deep, good quality sleep we need to be breathing properly. Mouth breathing, noisy breathing, and snoring can be a sign that nasal passages are blocked or that there are other structural issues making it hard to breathe properly.

 Teeth Grinding or Clenching

Waking up with a sore jaw, or noticing your child grinding their teeth? Teeth grinding is the body’s way of trying to open the airway during sleep.

2. Bed Wetting or Nighttime Bathroom Trips

For kids, bedwetting past the typical age can be a sign of SDB. In adults, frequent trips to the bathroom at night might also be a symptom.

3. Restlessness and Tossing and Turning

Ever notice you or your child wake up with sheets twisted or pillows on the floor? Tossing and turning can be a sign that the body is struggling to get comfortable, possibly due to poor airflow and the lack of deep sleep.

4. Sleeping in Odd Positions

When you or your child sleeps in odd positions—like head tilted back or kids who sleep in tripod position—it could be a sign the body is unconsciously trying to keep airways open.

5. Trouble Falling Asleep or Staying Asleep

Taking forever to fall asleep or waking up frequently can both signal SDB. Breathing disruptions keep your brain on high alert, so true rest is hard to come by.

6. Waking Up Groggy, Moody, or With Headaches

If you’re always waking up feeling like you didn’t sleep at all, or your child is cranky in the mornings, SDB could be the culprit. The lack of restful sleep can leave you irritable, groggy, and even lead to morning headaches.

7. Brain Fog, Inattentiveness, Hyperactivity, and Anxiety

It might surprise you, but SDB doesn’t always make you feel tired. For kids especially, poor sleep can lead to hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and trouble focusing—similar to ADHD symptoms. Adults may experience brain fog or memory lapses. SDB can also cause us to be in a state of "fight and flight" and anxiety.

So if you’re noticing any of these signs, trust your instincts and reach out for help. Addressing SDB early can mean better quality of life, better health, and most importantly, a healthier, thriving you.

As always, feel free to reach out for support😊
